Heart-to-Heart: With Bayley Mifsud, Merindah-Gunya.

Heart-to-Heart: With Bayley Mifsud, Merindah-Gunya.

Bonnie Kelly |

Meet Bayley Mifsud, also known as Merindah-Gunya meaning 'Beautiful Spirit' in Peek Whurrong language. We first heard of Bayley’s work through a recent interview with Lane Stockton (co-founder of Yarn’n) because of Bayley’s collaboration with them. We INSTANTLY fell in love with her striking and ultra colourful Aborignal artwork.

But not only that, we were in awe of Bayley’s ability to talk so beautifully about her culture and educate her community on why she does what she does. As soon as I stepped inside Bayley’s Melbourne apartment, it was like talking to an old friend. She is passionate, full of gratitude, strong-minded and of course, extremely talented at art. Step inside her home + studio and get to know this wonderful human.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Bayley Mifsud, I am a proud Peek Whurrong and Kirrae Whurrong woman of the Marr Nation, and I am an Aboriginal Artist. My Aboriginal name is Merindah-Gunya which means beautiful spirit.

How did your journey as an artist begin?

I have been practicing art for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is painting with my Elders at the Brambuk Cultural Centre in the Grampians when I was 5. It was here they began to teach me the art storytelling and how this practice is fundamental to Aboriginal art.

Describe how you feel when you are in your element creating art…

It’s almost like being in a meditative state. When I really get in my painting groove I don’t really think I just paint. I put some music on and just enjoy the process.

Art is a very personal thing, what are your tips for finding the right art for your home?

I think when trying to connect with art and find something that truly fits within your home, the art needs to reflect a part of you. Whether that is through colour, shape, or the story of the art, if you can connect with it then it will feel like it belongs in your home.

You’re a huge lover of sourcing pre-loved clothing. Your best tips for op shopping please! And what stores do you tend to find the most treasure in Vic/ Melb?

The best tip I have for shopping second hand is simply to be consistent. Go as often as you can and don’t be disheartened if you leave empty handed!

A massive congratulations on the release of your new book Yakeen ‘Dreaming’. Tell us all about it and where can we buy it?

Launching my first book has been a dream come true. Not only is it a children’s book but it serves as an accessible resource for people to learn about and engage with Aboriginal culture. You can find it in any major retailer nationwide!

You’re extremely passionate about educating people on First Nations culture. Can you suggest some ways we can all continue to learn more about this?

There are so many incredible First Nations creators everywhere you look. Whether you love books, podcasts or tv shows, there is engaging content that you can learn from available. As long as you make a conscious effort to consume content that is made by First Nations people and you do so with an open mind, you can’t go wrong.

What are the best pieces of wisdom you’ve been given by your Elders?

Recently I was going through quite a significant period of change in my life and my Nanna Maude said to me that when you lack direction, reconnecting with Country can help put you back on track. So she told me to go feel the sand on my bare feet.

Proudest career highlights to date? GO!

Reaching a point in my career where I could pursue art full time was life-changing. If someone had told me in high school that this would be my life I never would have believed them.

For fellow artists wanting to turn their passion project into a career… what is your best advice?

Do it for the love of it. Stay true to your passion and your values and success will come.

You have a whole day off to yourself, tell us in detail - how you would spend it?

A long walk with my dog Benji and a matcha to start the day. A visit to every op shop within a 5km radius of my house and a trip to the florist to buy myself some flowers. I’d then spend as much time with as many of my friends as possible.
