A look through the lens with…Georgie Young

A look through the lens with…Georgie Young

Alison Lewis |

Home to Georgie Young, her husband and son, textile designer and artist Georgie has created a sanctuary in the middle of Ringwood.

With exposed beams, pitched upstairs ceiling and stained glass windows synonymous with Australiana,  Georgie’s home exudes charm with an earthiness perfect for rustic colours and tones.

Who lives here?

Our little family, me, my husband Simon and our super energetic son Harley.

How long have you been here?

13 years! That’s certainly gone quick.

Why did you choose this place to call home?

Well when I was looking around the eastern suburbs of Melbourne I wanted something with a bit of character, not a cookie cutter home! I wasn’t so keen on the suburb at the time (but love it now!) and walked into this little mud brick town house and loved its quirkiness. There’s all sorts of interesting features like telephone poles still with numbers on them, wood paneling, little Australia shaped bolts and small diamond windows inset in the mudbrick wall. I love it!

What do you do for money?

I’m a freelance textile designer working from my beautiful light filled studio. Botanicals and colour are my thing! I also have my own products that I sell on my website; round cushions, art prints and soon some bags. www.georgiedaphne.com.au

What do you do for love?

I love getting lost in painting! Exploring ideas that lead on to other ideas that end up with a painting that’s completely different to the first idea. Getting out in nature is also a great love that I wish I got to do more often. I can’t wait to go camping this summer and getting to the beach with my family!

Happiest memory here?

Our engagement party! We completely emptied the place, created a magical space and crammed in 90 people. Luckily we had a clear night so people could hang outside around the fire pit, inside on the dancefloor or in the carport relaxing in the temporary lounge area.

Saddest memory here?

I can’t really think of any, so hopefully we can keep it that way.

Fave local hangout?

We love walking down the Mullum Mullum track to the Leaf and Vine café.

Next on the lust list?

I would love our backyard to be completely landscaped with some fruit trees, a little vegie patch down the back and lots of flowers. And a holiday to Japan next year would be amazing!!

Watching?

A bit of random comedy on Netflix and way too many stories on Instagram! Most of my nights are spent working on my business, painting, having friends over for dinner or visiting family so I actually don’t spend much time watching TV.
