Heart-to-Heart With: Jenny Cui

Heart-to-Heart With: Jenny Cui

Bonnie Kelly |

Meet Jenny Cui - co-founder of Rhino Rhino, the Australian and New Zealand distributor behind some of the most beautiful kids’ décor on the market. We first crossed paths a few years ago during a collaborative photoshoot at Phoebe’s old home in Warrandyte and instantly fell in love with Jenny’s gentle, grounding presence.

We’ve been stocking pieces from the Rhino Rhino range for years. Including everyone’s all-time favourite lamps from iconic Dutch brand, Mr Maria. We get asked on the daily about these lamps because they’re always a main character in our kids + baby photoshoots.

For this Heart-to-Heart, we spent a dreamy day styling our new Isla kids + baby collection in Jenny’s cosy Melbourne family home. We chatted about: mum life, career highlights, her approach to choosing artwork, family festive traditions, school holiday ideas and the backyard rituals she leans on when life gets overwhelming (very timely, as we head into peak December chaos).

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Jenny – mum of two, co-founder of Rhino Rhino and obsessed with beautiful and practical things for families. We partner with design-led kids and home brands and bring them to stores, galleries and peoples’ homes all across Australia and New Zealand.

Tell us about your career history, how did the idea for Rhino Rhino come to life? What drew you to the world of toys and kids bedroom decor?

I actually started my career as a doctor, but becoming a Mum flipped a switch – I wanted to build something creative that still cared for families, just in a different way. Rhino Rhino began when I couldn’t find pieces that were playful and beautifully designed for my own kids’ rooms, so we started importing the brands we loved and it grew from there.

What’s been your proudest "pinch-me" moment since starting Rhino Rhino?

Walking into a store I’ve loved for years and seeing a whole wall of Rhino Rhino pieces styled so beautifully – that never gets old. Or when my kids spot “mum’s products” at a friend’s house and their faces light up… that’s a real pinch-me moment.

There’s so many amazing treasures on the Rhino Rhino website but if you had to choose your absolute favourites... what would they be?

I love pieces that grow with our family - timeless night lights (yes, our beloved Miffy included) and the plush toys that have become part of the household. As our kids have gotten older, my favourites have evolved with their tastes, which is why Rhino Rhino has become a place for little ones, bigger kids, and even adults who appreciate thoughtful, design-led pieces.

We’ve been styling the Mr Maria range in our photoshoots for years. Can you share a little more about the backstory of these designs? With so many options out there in 2025, why do you think they remain so popular?

Mr Maria is all about storytelling through light – iconic characters like Miffy, translated into these calm, sculptural lamps with a beautiful soft glow. They’ve stayed popular because they hit that sweet spot: nostalgic for parents, comforting for kids, and minimal enough to work in almost any interior.

After working in this space for quite some time now - what’s your best advice when it comes to kids bedroom styling?

Start with a calm base – think neutral walls and good storage – then layer in colour and personality through bedding, art and toys. Choose a few hero pieces you really love, and leave some breathing space; a kid’s room should feel playful but not chaotic.
Most importantly, let your child’s individuality shine through so the room feels uniquely theirs, not just beautifully styled.

You’ve created a little self-care sanctuary in your backyard. What rituals help you reset when life feels overwhelming?

I created my little backyard sanctuary to optimise my health and give myself a space to truly reset. Mornings usually start with a cold plunge for that instant lift, and evenings are for the sauna - a chance to slow down and unwind from the day. I’ll often finish with a few minutes of red light therapy, which has become a grounding ritual. And when I share the space with my husband or friends, it becomes something even more special - a simple, tech-free way to reconnect and get back to the basics of genuine human connection.

It’s hard to believe school holidays are almost here again! Any go-to toys, books or activities you keep on hand to keep your little ones entertained during the long break?

I’m a bit storage-obsessed, so I keep a stack of Liewood Weston boxes in the living room, each packed with something different - craft kits, activity books, Lego, other building toys, puzzles, card games… all the things the kids can pull out (and ideally put back!) on their own.

For getting out of the house, our Melbourne go-tos are the Melbourne Zoo, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium exploring different kids farms, beaches, forest walks, and simple park adventures with scooters and a picnic. It doesn’t need to be fancy - just something that keeps their hands busy and imaginations switched on.

Does your family have any special Christmas traditions? And when December hits, what sparks the most excitement for your kids?

We kick off December with tree-decorating and Christmas music way too loud. The kids get ridiculously excited about their advent calendars - along with all the festive crafts, stickers and decorations that come with the season.

We also still make time to find the best Christmas lights around Melbourne, and with so many friends and family to catch up with, the whole month feels full of celebration.

What are your favourite features of your home and why?

I love that our hallway sets the tone the moment you walk in - a burst of colour and joy that instantly lifts the mood. The kids’ playroom is another favourite spot; it’s full of personality, creativity and all the little things that reflect who they are right now. And then there’s our backyard wellness corner with the sauna, which has become my little sanctuary when the day feels full-on.

Your hallway features the most stunning House of Orange artwork. How do you approach art in your home, and what draws you to the pieces you choose?

I choose art that makes me feel something the moment I see it - usually bold shapes, warm tones and a bit of playfulness. Our House of Orange pieces set the mood for the whole home; they feel like a little wink at our love of design as you walk in. And mixed in with the “grown-up” art, I love displaying the kids’ creations too - their drawings and paintings add such a genuine, joyful layer to our walls.

You’ve got a whole day to yourself in Melbourne… tell detail by detail, how you you’d spend it!

I’d sleep in (just a little), then start the morning with a hot mat or reformer Pilates class. After that, I’d head out for coffee or brunch with a friend before strolling through somewhere with a great stretch of fashion and homeware boutiques. I’d treat myself to some wellness time - a facial or something equally restorative. And a perfect day wouldn’t feel complete without my family, so I’d finish with dinner together and a walk around the block with my husband, kids and our dog.
