How am I made?
To create the starry fabric, the cotton velvet was dyed in our signature midnight blue colour before being hand screen printed using Guar Gum mixed with our specific colours - a method known as discharge printing. Discharge printing is used to bleach out a solid background colour to create a pattern in a lighter colour. The fabric is then treated through a heat machine to achieve the desired colour. For that extra je na sais quoi, our artisans have embroidered a scattering of plum stars to give this piece that extra sparkle.
On the reverse, our trademark ditsy floral was screen printed by hand in Jaipur. This process requires each colour to have its own screen, meaning seven screens were produced by an artisan before being printed individually to create this fabric. Once printed, the fabric is processed by being heated or 'cured' to properly dry and set the colours. Finally the fabric is washed to give the printed fabric a soft hand feel and to ensure the colours remain permanent. The practice of screen printing, particularly in prints as detailed as this one, takes extensive time and is one we’re proud to support for the preservation of this tradition and livelihood of our artisans.
